Kings at PrintWeek Live 2017
This week, Kings headed to Coventry for PrintWeek Live, a brand new and inclusive event to ‘Inspire, Innovate, Initiate!’ the leading names in the print industry. On Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th March, printers, buyers and vendors crowded into the Wasps Arena to take part in expert lead workshops and conferences, and to marvel at the latest innovative equipment and software available on the market.

Darryl Danielli, Editor of the publication PrintWeek, described the eponymously named event as “PrintWeek, but in ‘live’ form… a true celebration of print”. It was clear however, that the principal aim of the event was to inspire and provoke change in the industry. The prominence of this message could be felt throughout each one of the many conferences, spread across the two-day event. Speakers from Duplo, Xerox and Heidelberg (to name just a few) passionately discussed the future of the print industry and how we as an industry can incorporate and embrace the digital era, inspire young people with apprenticeships whilst continuing to develop client-centric and creative ways of producing powerful print products.

In a panel discussion, moderated by Darryl Danielli, panellists including Sarah Crumpler (Marketing Manager at Duplo) Anthony Thirlby (General Manager at Prinect, Heidelberg) and Kevin O’Donnell (Marketing Manager, Graphic Communications Europe - Xerox) described how print is an industry which is emotionally committed to the physical products which it creates and that the growth of automation should not be allowed to impact upon the relationship between the client and operator. Companies should work to utilise and guard the skills of the talented printers already experienced in the industry.

Kings also had the opportunity to explore the show floor, and were particularly keen to get a glimpse of the new Xerox Direct to Object Inkjet Printer. This luxury piece of equipment is able to print directly onto a product, creating up to 30 objects per hour and has the ability to scale for production. Perfect for the speedy production of beautiful and bespoke gifts for clients.

Excitement also surrounded the introduction of Canon’s new UV gel ink, which aims to ‘transform wide-format roll-to-roll printing’. The Océ Colorado 1640 UV Gel Printer debuted overnight (on the 8th March) in the USA – as a result the kit itself unfortunately wasn’t present at PrintWeek Live, however will be brought to the UK in time for exhibitions later in 2017.
