Beat the January blues by finding your dream job!

Blue Monday has arrived. Monday 15th January has been hailed the most depressing day of the year as we mourn the end of Christmas festivities and look longingly ahead to our next summer holiday, but don’t let today depress you! We have all you need to turn this unhappy day into a positive.

According to a new survey, a staggering number of people are looking for a new job this January. A survey of 1,000 employees by Investors in People showed that one in four were unhappy in their job. Almost half of those questioned said they planned to look for a new job in 2018, either to achieve better job satisfaction or to earn more.

So why not beat the January blues by starting your search for a job that's right for you today? With these useful tips from Kings, you'll have no trouble securing the perfect role for you.

Tailor your CV

One of the biggest mistakes candidates make is over complicating their CV. It's crucial when applying for any role that you tailor your CV to the individual job so the employer knows you’ve thought carefully about what they’re looking for and how your skills and experience meets their needs.

There is nothing more off-putting than receiving a generic CV which you could have sent to hundreds of different employers without any thought.

In terms of perfecting your CV, think about the length and its layout. Recruiters don’t have time to scour through pages and pages of information, listing all your experience back to your first ever Saturday job. Try to keep your CV to two sides of A4 and stick to concise bullet points rather than lengthy paragraphs. And this might sound obvious, but always remember to check for any spelling or grammar errors!

Include a Covering Letter

Your covering letter can be the first thing employers will look at so no covering letter shows no effort. Applying for a job without a covering letter, or even a short message outlining your suitability for the position, shows you haven’t taken any time to consider what it is they actually want.

If they receive two fairly similar CVs but one has a detailed covering letter attached to it, explaining their interest in the role, they are far more likely to invite them for an interview.

Another mistake people commonly make is using the same covering letter for similar jobs but forgetting to change the job title on the covering letter.

Always read the job description thoroughly

It's important to really look at the role you are applying for and make sure the hours, salary and type of job all fit your needs. Imagine you were offered the role the next day with the advertised salary and shift pattern, would you accept?

If you have hesitations at this early stage then the role might not be right for you. Applying will only be a waste of your own time and the employer’s!
